Gary Card’s Vauxhall Ampera Season’s Cool Christmas Tree
If there is one thing that Christmas always inspires it is innovative advertising campaigns and publicity stunts. The Vauxhall Motors Cool Christmas Tree is an amazing example of this, it was created in 2012 by designer Gary Card and displayed at The Kings Cross Filling Station in London. The ‘Electric Christmas’ is a mechanical Christmas tree inspired by the Amperas technology and it is made entirely out of car parts.
The outer shell of the tree has been designed to represent the shape of the Vauxhall Ampera and it is topped by a star that is made of Ampera headlights. Inside the tree there is an electrical engine which is displayed hourly when the tree opens up. The Ampera is an electric car and the design of this tree incorporates both the artistic and the scientific design elements of the Ampera in a truly fascinating way.
A stunning example of what happens when technology is interpreted artistically, a beautiful and mechanical display that is interesting and delightful in every way. The ‘Electric Christmas’ display was free for public viewing in November and December of 2012.
